Columbian Mammoth Bone Excavation in San Jose

Several miles north of our BioSITE study areas on the Guadalupe River, Roger Castillo made a discovery while examining an eroded part of the river. Large bones protruded from the river bank. Mr. Castillo then alerted the Santa Clara Valley Water District and local universities. Mark Goodwin, from the University of California Museum of Paleontology, identified the bones as a Columbian mammoth from the Pleistocene Epoch.
