McEnery Convention Center
San Jose, Ballroom A

Alice Waters pioneered a culinary philosophy dedicated to the use of fresh seasonal ingredients produced locally and sustainably. As chef and proprietor of Chez Panisse, Ms. Waters established a network of nearby suppliers who, like the restaurant, strive for environmental harmony and delicious flavor.

Alice Waters' commitment to education led to the creation of The Edible Schoolyard at Berkeley's Martin Luther King, Jr., Middle School, which has become a model public education program for integrating gardening, cooking, and sharing school lunch into the core academic curriculum. The Edible Schoolyard Project, a foundation established by Ms. Waters, helps classrooms from kindergarten through high school implement this nationally recognized approach into their schools. As a public policy advocate for school lunch reform and universal access to healthy, organic foods, Ms. Waters seeks to integrate a nutritious daily lunch and gardening experience into the academic curriculum of all public schools in the United States.

Alice Waters has received numerous awards and honors, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from Restaurant Magazine, the Force for Nature Award from the National Resources Defense Council, and the Global Environmental Citizen Award from the Harvard Medical School Center for Health and the Global Environment. She serves as Vice President of Slow Food International and is the author of eight books, including The Art of Simple Food: Notes and Recipes from a Delicious Revolution. In 2008, Ms. Waters was inducted into the California Hall of Fame.
