The Web site for Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose (CDM) is targeted to engage children, 4 to 10 years of age, in quality, on-line and off-line interactive activities, focusing on the areas of science, mathematics and literacy. The site is also designed to provide educational support to parents, care givers and educators who live and work with these youngsters, and to provide general information about the Museum.
Information Collection Policies
CDM has developed Web site policies and practices which are intended to respect and protect the privacy and safety of its visitors. These policies and practices have been designed to comply with the 1998 Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). CDM's policy is that no personal information will be collected from its users unless the user chooses to provide such information. Further, CDM limits itself to the collection of information that does not personally identify the user. Except in the case of e-commerce transactions, handled through contracted, secure third party vendors, the Web site will collect only a small portion of the Personally Identifiable Information components on its users (specific components collected are listed below). Personally Identifiable Information components include, but may not be limited to, first and last name, street address, telephone number. Registration on the site is not required to access any information or to participate in any of the activities.
In the adult content area, CDM provides parents the opportunity to register themselves and their child(ren). Information collected on the Registration Page is limited to: first name, middle initial of the adult, e-mail address and zipcode of the adult; and first name, birth month and year, and gender of the child(ren). On this page, adults are also given the opportunity to subscribe to a periodic e-mail newsletter for updates on Museum news and events. Family registration will allow CDM to offer more personal experiences on the site for each child registrant. On the Family & Youth Programs and Teacher's Center pages, adults are once again given the opportunity to subscribe to targeted, periodic e-mail newsletters. On these pages, the only information collected is the e-mail address to which the updates will be sent. In each of these cases, an automatic e-mail response will be generated to verify the information and to confirm consent to provide this information.
In the children's content area, the design and content are targeted to children up to 10 years old, and their parents and care givers. No information will be collected in this section. However, if a parent has registered his/her child(ren) previously on the Registration Page in the adult content area, there will be times in which the child's name appears on the screen as he/she progresses through the site's activities and narratives. In the children's content area, registration of a child is not a requirement to experience the activities or narratives. In compliance with COPPA, registration of each child, under the age of 13 (as determined by the month and year of birth) will be verified via e-mail with the adult registrant's e-mail.
From time to time, however, CDM may collect limited identifiable information, such as an e-mail address, in the children's content area when users send in responses or submittals to our on-line activities. CDM may use these e-mail addresses to send a response acknowledging receipt and then will delete the e-mail information from its mail server.
CDM does reserve the right to contract with secure third party vendors to conduct specific e-commerce transactions, such as membership sales and retail store sales. For e-commerce transactions, the collection of Personally Identifiable Information will be required. This information will be processed through and stored on secure servers. Adult visitors electing to participate in on-line transactions will be transferred from the CDM Web site to that of the specific third party vendor. CDM does not intend to collect personally identifiable information on CDM's Web server.
Use of Collected Information
The information collected via registration will not be shared or provided to any other party, except in the aggregate. We will share broad demographic information to those parties with which we establish strategic alliances and from which we receive significant sponsorship of the Web site. No specific user information will be provided.
CDM shares its membership mailing list with local non-profits and community groups. Information gained through an on-line Museum membership is treated the same as information gained via memberships purchased at the Museum or via the mail. Individuals are given the option of not having their information shared in this manner.
CDM does not share its mailing lists with other entities. Information gained through an on-line Museum membership is treated the same as information gained via memberships purchased at the Museum or via the mail. CDM adheres to an “opt-in” policy whereby individuals supplying an e-mail address must approve permission for CDM to contact him/her via e-mail in future communications.
Links to Other Sites
CDM will employ the use of "bumper pages" at certain times throughout the site, and specifically in the children's content area, to inform users when they are leaving the CDM Web site and moving to a different site.
E-mail confirmation by an adult parent/guardian is required prior to posting any materials sent from a child onto the Web site or to be displayed in the Museum.
The importance of security in regard to CDM's Web site and the information provided by users is of utmost concern. CDM staff will exercise great care in providing secure transmission of user's information to and storage on CDM's Web server. However, it is not possible to guarantee 100% secure transmission over the Internet. Therefore, CDM cannot insure or warrant the security of any information transmitted to CDM or to its contracted, third party vendors, and the user does so at his/her own risk. Once the transmitted information has been received at CDM's Web server, CDM staff will make its best effort to insure security on CDM's system.
