Lunada
In small towns around Mexico, community members come together informally on the night of the full moon to share stories, poetry and music. Join us as this tradition is celebrated several times throughout the year. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., performances are from 6 to 7:30 p.m, and open Mic begins around 7:40 p.m. Scheduled Performers: Martin Espino, the Sounds of Ancient Mexico, Grupo Folklórico Herúvi Kalo, Folklórico Nacional Mexicano, and Michael Xavier Mulea.

Performances

Martin Espino, the Sounds of Ancient Mexico: With over 45 years of experience as a performer and teacher, Maestro Espino uses a variety of percussion and wind instruments to transport audiences on a journey of sound to ancient Mexico. His interactive performances offer audiences a chance to become members of his band. Mr. Espino is also an accomplished instrument-maker and will demonstrate his craft in the Art Loft on Sunday, August 6th. For more information on Mr. Espino, visit his Web site.

Grupo Folklórico Herúvi Kalo brings to life the traditional folklorico dance, stirring movements, and colorful costumes of Mexican culture. Directed by Génesis Ibañez, Ruth Castro and Kevin Mendoza, part of the troupe’s mission is to create cultural awareness. For more information, visit their Web site.

Folklórico Nacional Mexicano is made up of teens who dance lively folk dances of Mexico. Directed by Maestra Elena Robles—who doubles as Lunada MC—the youth are dedicated to community service as well as learning about culture and history through dance. They have performed throughout the state and at the annual Danzantes Unidos festival in Fresno.

Michael Xavier Mulea: We are pleased to welcome this rising high school senior back to our stage. Michael was only 13 when he placed second in the South Bay Teen Idol competition. Michael adds his signature vocal style to groovin’ renditions of R & B, soul, and pop tunes. This talented young singer is a local favorite. Catch a glimpse of him on YouTube.
