Because mammoths are extinct, it is difficult to know how they behaved when they were alive. We can look at fossils to learn more about how they might have lived, and luckily, we can also study their close relatives, the elephants, to understand their behavior.

By looking at the fossil record and observing elephants, paleontologists can answer lots of questions about how mammoths behaved.
