Virtual Museum – Make a Sky Window

Make a “window” out of construction paper and cardboard that shows both the day and night sky.

MATERIALS

  • 8.5” x 11” pieces of cardboard and black and blue construction paper
  • Sky image (download .pdf)
  • Glue stick
  • Scissors
  • Optional: popsicle stick, crayons or markers

TRY IT!

  1. Cut black and blue construction paper and cardboard into frames of the same size with 2” wide borders.
  2. Glue the black piece of paper on one side of cardboard and the blue piece on the other side. If you like, you can glue a popsicle stick between the paper and the cardboard to use as a handle to hold up your sky window.
  3. Download the sky image from the url above, then print it and cut it into a 1” square or rectangle.
  4. Glue each sky image onto the window frame during a conversation with your child about what has been seen in the sky.

GUIDING QUESTIONS

  • Why do you think this window frame has 2 sides: blue and black? Do you see anything that is visible in both the day and the night?
  • Do you think it would be more exciting to see fireworks at night or during the day? Why?
  • Have you ever seen the Moon during the day?

LEARNING BEHIND THE PLAY

  • Develop vocabulary by describing and discussing different objects in the sky
  • Improve observation skills by exploring the sky in different times of the day
  • Learn basic science processes of observing, predicting and verifying the prediction

TAKE IT FURTHER

Take your window frame with you and see what you can find in the sky at night. Circle it on the night side of your frame. Did you see anything that surprised you?
