Summary:
The Theatre Technician is the lead technician for sound, lighting and multimedia equipment, both permanent and portable, handling set-up and operations for program needs within the Museum. The person in this position serves as the main contact for guest performers’ technical needs, overseeing all technical operations as well as general safety and house management.
Responsibilities:
This is a highly visible position, especially with external communities. Responsible for providing proactive and creative technical production support for performances and activities. Expectations and experience are described below.
- Maintenance of the environment, physical space, and technical equipment of the Theatre and Amphitheatre, including lighting and sound equipment, both permanent and portable, environmental treatments, and sets;
- Support of culturally relevant activities and performances in conjunction with Museum-wide community events and festivals including Family Lunadas, Three Kings, Lunar New Year, Children of the Dragon, Diwali, Noon Year’s Eve, Winter Festival and others;
- Set-up and manage performance and event spaces;
- Set-up and operate lighting, sound and multimedia equipment;
- Management of Theatre, Amphitheatre, and programming technical needs, including appropriate utilization and care of technical theatre equipment, troubleshooting and providing creative solutions in real time, and recommending new equipment, upgrades, changes and repairs as needed;
- Advisement on Facility Use technical needs;
- On-going training for the part-time staff and volunteers who facilitate activities in the Theater and Amphitheater; one-on-one and group trainings on the technical skills needed to operate theater equipment and programming;
- Program co-development and coordination with the other facilitated spaces in the Museum, including the Wonder Cabinet, LeRoy Neiman Art Studio;
- Co-development and implementation of the Museum’s Winter Festival, a 2-6 week installation designed to promote wonder and drive audience during the November-January timeframe;
- Departmental duties as required, including participation as Education Department representative in cross-departmental teams; and
- Fulfill departmental duties as required.
Education/Experience:
This position requires a technical expertise with a wide variety of AV equipment, and an ability to research and learn new skills as needed. Strong visitor service, as well as the ability to work with a wide variety of people including children and visiting artists is important.
- BA preferred;
- Strong, proven experience in stage / production management preferred;
- Excellent interpersonal skills, able to communicate clearly and consistently with all theatre and event space users, especially non-technical users.
- Highly organized with successful experience in meeting deadlines and managing conflicting priorities.
- Proficient in Apple and PC applications such as Powerpoint, Keynote, iCloud, etc.
- Ability to work flexible hours including evenings and some weekend;
- Ability to lift/move 25 lbs;
