Youth Programs Facilitator

Status: Part-time; non-exempt, temporary position

Supervisor: Youth Educator

Summary:

Assist the Youth Educator with development, facilitation and technological aspects of after school programs for middle school youth in the CDMedia.Studio at Children’s Discovery Museum of San Jose. The Media Studio provides programming after school and on weekends that fosters learning in areas of multimedia production, and includes a strong component of documentation and reflection. Current projects include a youth produced website, www.getchy.com, and service learning programs that include a digital photography, video and newsletter component.

Responsibilities:

Position is focused on task follow through and high customer interaction. Judgement in day to day problem solving and service will impact museum resources. Expectations and experience required are described below.

  • Preparing for daily programs and cleaning-up after programs
  • Assisting youth in developing products created for public viewing (films, video, magazines, Web pages), including knowledge of current trends, facilitation techniques for youth development, and a keen sense of the balance between process and product when working with youth
  • Saturday schedule; occasional evenings

Education/Experience

Any combination of education and experience providing the knowledge for successful performance would be qualifying. Minimum employment standards are:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Previous experience working with adolescents
  • Familiarity with the use of digital still and video equipment
  • Familiarity with a variety of industry standard multimedia tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Web design tools, and digital video editing software
  • Familiarity with both PC and MAC operating systems
  • Excellent communication skills with multiple audiences including youth, parents, and community members

Special Skills

Spanish language skills highly desirable.
