Julie Eliza Cardenas

Julie Eliza Cardenas is a San Jose native and the second eldest of seven children. Cardenas has been in the field of early education for 18 years, and she is passionate about creating art experiences for young children and their families. Cardenas focuses her craft on painting and comic illustration while exploring her own lived experiences of being a first-generation Mexican-Peruvian-American. Julie graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles with a BA in English Literature. She received her M.Ed in Art Education from Lesley University and her MFA in Comics from the California College of the Arts. Cardenas’s art exhibition celebrates the food and memories that are collected through the art of cooking. Coupled with still life paintings, her comic illustrations detail the life of children from immigrant parents who find solace in sharing foods that are important to their Latino heritage.
